Intro to Microdosing

What is Microdosing?

Microdosing is the practice of taking small doses of medicinal mushrooms, in order to experience long-term benefits without any intense effects. The practice is extremely popular, with many people claiming that it has helped them to improve their mood, focus, and creativity.

Think of microdosing like you would your morning cup of coffee, or a bit of electrolytes in your water. Both are examples of substances that we take for a desired effect (energy, hydration), but in doses that don't incapacitate us! Too much caffeine can have you bouncing off the walls, then give you a devastating crash. Too much magnesium will send you running to the bathroom. The same is true for psychedelics - dosage is key.

You might consider microdosing if you're looking to:

  • improve your mood
  • increase your focus
  • enhance your creativity
  • reduce anxiety or depression
  • bring more mindfulness to your relationships
  • increase your openness to spiritual growth

How to Microdose

Dosage

The most common dosage for microdosing is 0.1-0.3 grams of dried mushrooms. This is a very small amount, and it's important to be precise with your measurements. If you're using a scale, make sure it's accurate to at least 0.01 grams. If you're buying pre-dosed capsules, make sure you trust that the source is preparing them with precision and intention.

Schedule

It's common to "cycle" your microdosing, so that your tolerance doesn't build up. A common schedule is to microdose every third day.

For a slightly higher dose schedule, microdose 4 days in a row, then take 3 days off.

Here at Magonia Mushrooms, we believe that the best schedule is the one that works for you - even if that means "intuitive" dosing (taking it when and how you need it)!

Is Microdosing Safe?

Microdosing is generally considered to be safe, but remember that everyone's body is different! If you're considering microdosing, it's important to start with a small dose, ideally at a time when you aren't operating heavy machinery or driving. After a few weeks, you'll likely have built a personal relationship with the medicine and will know when to adjust dose or timing.

If you are currently taking SSRIs or other medications, it's important to research how they interact with medicinal mushrooms. For example, I receive many anecdotal reports that SSRIs can dampen or totally nullify the effects of certain types that act on the serotonin receptors in the brain.

Is Microdosing Legal?

The legality of microdosing varies from place to place. In the United States, psilocybin is a Schedule I controlled substance, which means that it's illegal to possess or distribute. However, there is some wiggle room here - especially if you live in Seattle. In 2021, the City of Seattle decriminalized the possession of psilocybin mushrooms and other natural psychedelics. What this means technically is that mushroom consumption and cultivation are among the lowest enforcement priorities for the Seattle Police Department. In other words, as long as you're being safe and consuming responsibly you likely won't have a problem.
